Our Diaper Stash is Complete!

As of a few days ago all of our diapers are here and as of this morning, all the diapers are prepped and ready. (Prepped means that they are pre-washed and that they are ready to absorb)

I thought that I would post what my stash consists of, since many people aren't familiar with modern cloth diapering.

During the newborn phase we will use a Kissaluv or a Bummis prefold underneath a Thirsties Duo Wrap size 1 or one of the Lil Joeys All in Ones (meaning that everything is already together, you just put it on like a disposable) We lucked out and scored 8 used Kissluvs on ebay for $66! The other four were gifts. The 6 prefolds cost $20 in total. 3 of the Thirsties covers were gifts and one we bought during Small Business Saturday so Amex reimbursed us. The Lil Joeys were bought used and cost $9 a piece. Kissaluvs and Thirsties are made in the US and Bummis are made responsibly in Pakistan. These diaper will fit her for nearly 4 months (except the Lil Joeys that will fit for about 2 months.)

Total cost for newborn diapers-$104

Starting at around 8-10lbs the FuzziBunz and gDiapers will start to fit her. The FuzziBunz are pocket diapers, meaning that there is an insert that fits into a pocket in the back. These are super easy to use. They are one size and should fit her all the way through potty training. They are about $19 a piece. Nearly all of ours were gifts or bought with gifted money. I think that I bought 2 or 3 of them so that cost about $57. The gDiapers are a neat hybrid. You can either use a cloth insert or a disposable insert. We have some of both. Both of these diapers look super trim on baby and both go on like a disposable. The gDiapers were gifted to us as well.

Total spent on diapers up to potty training-$57

For her wipes we decided to also use washable wipes. If we are already washing diapers might as well wash the wipes too, right? I bought a twin size flannel sheet at the second hand shop and washed it on hot then I cut it into 8x8 squares. The sheet produced 6 dozen wipes.

Total cost for wipes- $1.95

Another necessity for cloth diapering is a diaper sprayer. These allow you to clean off the stinky stuff and help prevent staining. Wet bags/pail liners are also super helpful. All the Planet Wise products are made in the US. We used gift cards and bought one large wet/dry bag, one pail liner, and one small wet bag for our diaper bag. We will be purchasing one more pail liner at $16.50 and the diaper sprayer at $44.99.

Total cost for accesories-$61.49

I am sure that through her time in diapers I will want to add some here or there to add more of a certain color or style but for now our total out of pocket diapering costs is $224.44. Compare that to the average cost of diapering a baby through potty training at nearly $2,000. I think we made a great choice. :) I also think that it is important to note that cloth can be reused for subsequent children and they retain up to 70% of their value on resale sites!
